Founded in 2002, the SAN JACINTO BATTLEGROUND CONSERVANCY is dedicated to the protection and conservation of the San Jacinto Battlefield---the site of the culminating military event of the Texas Revolution fought on April 20 and April 21, 1836.
The Texas victory at San Jacinto secured independence from Mexico and led to the establishment of the Republic of Texas, and ultimately led to the annexation of Texas to the United States. The battlefield is one of the most important, but underappreciated historic sites in the state. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department manages the San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site consisting of approximately 1,200 acres. Recent archival and archeological research shows tt the battlefield's boundaries should also include additionala land surrounding the State Historic Site.
In 2010, the San Jacinto Battleground was listed by Preservation Texas as one of the state's "Most Endangered Places" because of continuing threats of industrial encroachment and incompatible development. The San Jacinto Battleground Conservancy is the only non-profit whose mission is solely dedicated to protecting and conserving tghe battleground.
